It also became the shipyard responsible for building 10% of all Liberty Ships, which in turn created jobs for 30,000 people. South Portland Maine hired many women during this historical period to do the industrial work of the men who left for war. These days South Portland Maine is the home to great shopping at the Maine Mall, top manufacturers of computer components, as well as many other important businesses. South Portland Maine has a fantastic department of Parks and Recreations which plays an enormous role in the life of South Portland Maine residents and visitors. Some of the South Portland Maine recreational facilities consist of 525 acres of parkland, a nine hole golf course, municipal beaches and 1.8 miles of hiking trails.
